Project Thirteen
High Potency Laboratory
A high potency laboratory handles compounds or materials that have a high level of toxicity, flammability, reactivity, or other hazardous properties. These labs are typically used for the research, development, and production of high-potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs), which are drugs that have a very low therapeutic index, meaning that even small changes in dose can have a large impact on efficacy and safety.
These laboratories have specific requirements for safety, such as high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration, chemical fume hoods, and specialized ventilation systems to prevent the release of hazardous particles or gases into the environment. They also require strict controls on access and may have additional security measures in place to protect the materials and personnel within the lab.
It's very important that these labs are designed, built, and operated according to the regulations and guidelines specific to the applicable industry. They also should be tested and certified by the relevant authorities to ensure that they meet the safety and performance requirements.
